Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and Becker muscular dystrophy (BMD) are types of neuromuscular disorders that affect the nerves and the muscles. Whilst both involve the DMD gene, Becker muscular dystrophy has a milder presentation.

Specimen Requirements

EDTA blood: Adult: 2 x 5 ml

Child: 2 x 1-3 ml


  • Amniotic fluid 20ml
  • Chorionic villus 20mg


Patient to be referred to a neurologist for diagnostic tests and to a genetics clinic for carrier/prenatal testing.
