For a patient to be seen in a genetics clinic we require a referral from their doctor which can be faxed or emailed to VCGS:

Patients are allocated into the appropriate clinic based on their reason for referral and location.

For patients requiring urgent appointments, please ask your doctor to contact us during business hours: 1300 11 8247 and ask to speak to the Duty Genetic Counsellor.

How to prepare for a clinic appointment?

It is advised that patients arrive 20 minutes prior to clinic appointments. Parking is limited at most hospitals.

Typically patients do not need to prepare in any way for a genetics clinic, but may be asked to bring along relevant information from previous blood tests and x-rays.

We also recommend patients bring along a family member or a friend for additional support because the information for some genetic conditions can be complex.

If English is not the first language of the patient, an interpreter can be arranged but this will need to be advised before the day of the appointment.

How much will it cost?

A genetics clinic consultation is free of charge.

If additional testing is required, there may be some out of pocket cost. Many genetic tests are not covered by Medicare. Any tests that have an out of pocket cost should be discussed at the time of consultation.

Patients with a Health Care Card and those eligible for a Carer Allowance may be entitled to discounted parking or travel assistance where they have had to travel greater than 100km to attend the appointment. These entitlements can be accessed through the Department of Health & Human Services or you can ask for an application form at your genetics clinic.
